The
West Eugene Wetlands includes more than 2,200 acres of
open space within the city limits of Eugene including:
• More than two miles of walking trails and boardwalks
• A wildlife observation blind
• Several interpretive overlooks
• A paved bike path that follows Amazon Creek through the
wetlands.
The
wetlands are accessible during daylight hours free of charge. There
are a variety of seasonal opportunities to observe wildlife, discover
beautiful plants, and explore the rare and vanishing Willamette
wet prairie habitat.
Location
The West Eugene Wetlands Project base of operations is located
on the corner of West 11th Avenue and Danebo Avenue at the
West Eugene Wetlands Project office. To access the site by
car, drive west on Beltline highway until it ends, at West
11th Avenue. Turn right and proceed one block to Danebo Avenue
then turn right onto Danebo. Turn into the second driveway
on the right and park in the gravel parking area.
The
West Eugene Wetland project office is surrounded by industrial sites,
but with direct links in all four cardinal directions to additional
wetland sites. It is a central link to the westward bike path to
Fern Ridge reservoir, south to the Ridgeline Trail connection via
Willow Creek, plus north and east to more historic sites such as
Stewart Pond.

Education
Program
The West Eugene Wetlands education program is designed to help facilitate
the process of discovery, learning, and enjoyment of the wetlands.
Our
formal education program focuses on elementary students, middle
school and high school students. We currently offer two types of
educational experiences.
Field
trips, led by staff and volunteers occur in the West Eugene Wetlands.
Activities include the topics of watersheds, plants, food chains,
insects, soils, and habitats, and are conducted in a variety of
habitats including wet prairie, upland prairie, shrub wetlands,
forested wetlands, and oak savannas.
Classroom
presentations are offered for K-8th grade classes and cover a
variety of topics. Teachers can choose from "What is a Wetland", "Reptiles
and Amphibians", "Mammals of the Wetlands", "Bird
Migration", and "Pollination". In all programs,
students learn about the West Eugene Wetlands and their ecological
importance.
We
have available upon request a site-specific “Educator’s
Guide to the West Eugene Wetlands” full of background information,
on-site and follow-up activities. To schedule a field trip or classroom
presentation contact:Liz Myers, 683-6483.
The
program also facilitates informal educational experiences through
interpretation. Interpretation encourages self directed learning.
Beautiful signage at various wetland sites offer opportunities to
augment the visitor's experience of the magical wetlands. The interpretive
program provides opportunities for the community to learn about
their environment. These opportunities include interpretive signs,
and family-oriented evening and weekend programs, including information
about ecological processes and specific species in the West Eugene
Wetlands habitat. |
